Another one of the most famous “bad” movies ever made, Ray Kellog’s The Killer Shrews is a film with a dull start and middle, but once the horrible puppet “shrews” are revealed, the movie takes a huge plunge into the pool of goofiness that makes it entertaining as hell.
The premise is silly, people are stranded on an island research compound during a hurricane while a scientist experiments on some shrews to try to find the genes responsible for growth that he can later use safely on humans to decrease us in size and lessen the impact of overpopulation. The result is a pack of hilarious looking wolf size shrews that can burrow under the soft, muddy ground or through adobe walls, able to attack at will.
It’s all very silly but very fun if you’re in the mood for a quick (69 minute) cheese fest. The campiness of it all made it one of the more enjoyable Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes.
