Destroy All Planets (Gamera vs. Viras) (1968)
Schlocky, family friendly fun!
Much like Wu Tang, Gamera is for the children and the more ridiculous the better with these movies. Gamera vs. Viras (aka Destroy All Planets) is considered one of the worst of these movies, and you know what that means— it’s amazing!
Gamera is a friend to all children, so if you’re a race of alien squid creatures that want to take over the Earth and only Gamera stands in your way, you bait him in the only way can— abducting the two Japanese Boy Scouts that were so excited to see Gamera swim by so you can take them hostage and force the United Nations (!) and Gamera to bow to your demands or risk the boys being killed. This set up gives us plenty of excuses for schlocky kaiju fights that are clearly aimed at children (with lots of repeat footage from other Gamera films, including black and white footage from the original Gamera film just presented as if it’s new).
